(December 31, 2011) After putting it off for nearly 40 years, I was presented with a special opportunity to experience the arrival of the New Year at Times Square. Not since the anti-nuclear demonstrations of the 80s had I felt the energy of over a million people all around me. New York is eternally in my blood. I felt sadness and pride for the members of my family who have long left this earth, and I gave thanks for those loved ones who are still continuing the journey. Peace and Love to all of you!

The observance was initiated by Benjamin (aka “Yellow Benjy”) Melendez, founder and former leader of the Ghetto Brothers (a so-called South Bronx Puerto Rican Gang).
