“Evelina’s Way”

That which has been given to us, we must hold onto tirelessly @ "Evelina's Way"

(July 6, 2011) On the corner of 156th Street & Prospect Avenue in the Bronx hangs a fresh new marker. The street is now officially known as “Dra. Evelina Antonetty Way.” The idea was set into motion nearly ten years ago by the youngest daughter and the oldest grandson of the beloved community activitist and founder of United Bronx Parents Inc. But their effort to further preserve Mrs. Antonetty’s legacy encountered snafus and political bureaucracies making it seem almost hopeless.

In 2010, as a clear testament to the impact that Dra. Evelina Lopez Antonetty and the hundreds who were part of the daily struggles taken on by the organization had had on the community it served, the way was opened. NYC Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo (District 17) and several of her collegues gave the UBP family the political might to make the street naming a reality.

What would have probably brought more joy to the heart of Evelina was that the councilwoman who had cleared the way was once a UBP member herself. As a young girl growing up in the South Bronx, Maria del Carmen Arroyo saw and experienced first-hand the mighty legacy of “Mrs. A”. Ironically, their individual stories contain many parallels that speak to the strength and unrelenting determination of our Puerto Rican women leaders. Evelina’s Way.
