Bronx Week 2016 Grand Finale

The Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr. works up the crowd @ 45th Annual Bronx Week Music Concert

(May 15, 2016) The 45th Annual Bronx Week grand finale proved to be a challenge for the thousands that came out and endured the weather. The 11-day celebration of the borough came to its climax with a parade, food & arts festival and music concert on Mosholu Parkway.

After the induction of Peter Sohn (Film Arts), Vincent Pastore (Actor), Arlene Alda (Photographer & Writer), and Eduardo Yilaro (Dance) into The Bronx Walk of Fame (Grand Concourse), the group led the annual parade on its trek east along Mosholu Parkway towards the Reviewing Stand at Van Cortlandt Ave. The inductees and all the marchers were greeted by The Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr., along with co-host hip hop legend Melle Mel and an enthusiastic grand-stand audience.

Attendance grew exponentially as the main stage came alive with music. Performing were EC Salsero, the outstanding Tito Nieves, freestyle dancer and singer Judy Torres, and Grammy Award-winning hip hop trio Naughty By Nature.

Tito Nieves continues to be one of the most exciting salsa performers and singers out there, today. His enlisted band composed mainly of 8 y Más musicans led by Bobby Allende provided him with sharp and explosive accompaniment. Tito even stepped aside and provided coro for the current 8 y Más lead vocalist Eddie Rosado.

The closer Naughty By Nature blew Mosholu Parkway away (or what was left of it) with their O.P.P. and two featured acts that included hip hop duos Smif N Wessun and BBOD. MCs Treach and Vin Rock (with DJ Kay Gee spinning) dominated the mainstage slapping folks up with their rhymes and their repertoire of hits, bringing some heat to a chilly late afternoon. For their finale, the trio turned the mikes over to hip hop legends Grandmaster Caz (Cold Crush Brothers), Grandmaster Melle Mel (Furious Five) and Master Gee (The Sugarhill Gang), adding some of the old-school flavor to the mix. Performers and audience alike joined in to sing Happy Birthday to Melle Mel.
