(November 19, 2016) The 11th Annual Comité Noviembre Puerto Rican Artisan Fair & 5th Annual Puerto Rican Book Expo proved to be a highlight for Puerto Rican Heritage Month observances in The Bronx. The various participating artisans, mostly representing the PRIDA collective, brought an eclectic offering of traditional and expressive art & crafts that celebrated and related Puerto Rican heritage and beauty in full rainbow. Workshops on traditional mask making, the history of Los Tres Reyes, and even bomba dancing fundamentals (led by Milteri Tucker) added depth and excitement to the day.

At the 5th Annual Puerto Rican Book Expo, there was a diverse range of subjects, and genres with familiar poets and writers like Papoleto Melendez and Maria Aponte; scholarly publications about Castro’s visit to the South Bronx, Puerto Rican pioneers in Jazz music, and the social constructs of masculine identity; and children’s stories about reasons to smile, magical coins, a missing chancleta, and other colorful adventures. Writer Bobby Gonzalez hosted a recital at the expo that featured readings by some of the authors present.

Inside the Hostos Center Main Theater, a traditional compliment to the Fair & Expo, the final showcase of the South Bronx Folk Festival – presented by the Diversity in Arts and Nations For Cultural Education – brought performances by the Teen Dance Project, and by the established Puerto Rican folk dance and theater company Danza Fiesta.

This year’s fair was dedicated to Oscar López Rivera – Puerto Rican political prisoner and freedom fighter. Comité Noviembre has celebrated Puerto Rican Heritage Month in this country for the past 30 years.
