‘Year of the Rooster’ Celebration
(January 28, 2017) New York City’s Chinatown welcomed the ‘Year of the Rooster’ with its annual fireworks ceremony and cultural festival. The rooster is the tenth in the 12-year cycle of zodiac animals which marks the beginning of the Chinese lunar calendar.
Thousands of residents and tourist packed into the Sara D. Roosevelt Park (between Grand & Hester Streets) early to welcome in the New Year. Nearly 600,000 firecrackers were set off, during the ceremony, to ward away evil spirits. The noise was deafening and the smoke was both intense and cleansing.
The Year of the Rooster celebration runs through February 15, 2017.
