Tito Puente Retrospective: 50 Years of 'El Rey'

(April 20-22, 2017) Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture presented what could only be described as an outstanding tribute to Latin Music legend Ernesto Antonio “Tito” Puente. The 3-day event titled Tito Puente Retrospective: 50 Years of ‘El Rey’ worked the historic landscape of his journey, planted fresh seeds in the here and now, and celebrated another bounty of young musicians inspired by the priceless contributions of Puente’s genius and mastery.

‘Women in Salsa’ @ BMHC

(August 20, 2016) The Bronx Music Heritage Center whipped up more summer entertainment, this time as part of the month long celebration Bronx SalsaFest. ‘Women in Salsa’ featured a poetic recital by “La Madrina” Sandra Maria Esteves — one of founders of the Nuyorican Poetry Movement — accompanied by percussionist Bobby Sanabria.

(July 8, 2015) Fania All-Star legend Ismael Miranda performed at St. Mary’s Park in The Bronx as part of the Summerstage 2015 liveconcert series. Miranda who grew up in Loisaida and later returned to Puerto Rico, felt right at home with the large turn-out of Boricuas. Ismael and his group were later joined by Jose Alberto who will be celebrating his 40th Anniversary in music at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing 2015.

(May 18, 2014) The 43rd annual Bronx Week, 10-day celebration of all things Bronx, culminated in the Bedford Park | Norwood sections of the Mosholu Parkway with a full-blown show of grandeur and pride. Thousands made their way over to the 2014 Bronx Week Food, Arts & Music Festival, after the annual parade, for some home-town fun and partying.

It was his way of saying thanks to an area that had opened up its space to him, so that he could teach others about the drum. Those transformations allowed him to work out answers to some questions residing in his head.

Puerto Rican salsero Ismael Miranda, one of the few surviving members of the Fania All-Stars, was greeted by a packed house of fans and peers who came to honor this mile-stone.
